SK On, Solid Power partner to speed up development of all-solid-state batteries

SK On's Chief Commercial Officer, Sung Min-suk and Solid Power's Chief Executive Officer, John Van Scoter at the signing ceremony (Jan. 10) held at the sidelines of CES 2024, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

SK On, a leading electric vehicle manufacturer has signed an agreement with a US-based developer of solid-state batteries, Solid Power, to speed up the development of all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs).

The research and development technology license agreement was signed between SK On and Solid Power on the sidelines of CES 2024, held earlier this month in Las Vegas, Nevada. The newly formed partnership will result in SK On installing all solid-state battery pilot line at its Battery Research Institute in Daejeon, Korea by 2025.

"Under the agreement, SK On will have the right to use Solid Power's technologies on ASSB cell design and pilot production processes for research and development purposes. Solid Power will help the South Korean battery maker accelerate the development of ASSBs boasting safety and high performance," SK On said in a statement. The company will also supply sulfide-solid electrolytes to SK On.

ASSB battery refers to a battery that uses solid electrolytes only instead of liquid or gel-based electrolytes. Solid electrolytes decrease the weight and volume of batteries and reduce the risk of fire.

In 2021, SK On agreed to invest US $30 million in Solid Power and jointly develop next-generation ASSBs. Since then, the two companies have been discussing detailed cooperation plans. Following the successful collaboration, SK On and Solid Power will jointly work to commercialize ASSBs.
