Form Energy to deploy 15MW/1500MWh iron air battery systems in Georgia

Iron-air battery system manufacturer, Form Energy Inc. (Form Energy) on Monday announced that it will deploy a 15MW/1500 MWh iron-air battery system under a definitive agreement with Georgia Power, the largest electric subsidiary of Southern Company (NYSE:SO).

Georgia Power plans to integrate additional clean energy into its system while maintaining grid resiliency and reliability. Following regulatory approvals, Form Energy's battery storage systems are expected to come online by 2026.

"Our customers, including many business and commercial accounts, are increasingly interested in the use of new technologies such as multi-day energy storage to help grow renewable energy and enhance reliability, especially as they relocate or grow their operations in Georgia. Form Energy's technology is cutting edge and we're excited to continue to work with them to serve our customers."

Form Energy and Georgia Power continue to work together to fully evaluate and demonstrate the 100-hour iron-air battery technology. Georgia Power intends to strengthen its grid against normal day-to-day, week-to-week, and season-to-season weather variability along with extreme weather events. Along with modeling by Georgia Power, the process also includes inputs from Formware, Form Energy's next-generation investment and operational modeling tool for power grids.

Last month, Form Energy held a groundbreaking ceremony in West Virginia, USA for the construction of Form Factory 1. The company aims to manufacture its propriety iron-air battery technology and energy storage systems for long-duration energy storage (LDES) applications.
