Powin unveils 'Pod' next-gen BESS platform for utility-scale projects

Energy storage solutions firm Powin LLC has presented its next-generation, multi-cell-based battery energy storage system (BESS) platform - the 'Powin Pod' - at the just concluded Clean Power 2024 exhibition in Minneapolis, United States.

Designed for utility-scale projects, the 'Pod' takes Powin's battery energy storage system (BESS) technology to the next level, setting a new standard for energy storage solutions with higher energy density, top-tier safety, reliability and enhanced cost savings, according to the manufacturer.

The Pod platform complements Powin's 'Centipede' product line, offering a comprehensive suite of solutions to meet diverse customer requirements. The new product will be made in the US and is expected to witness customer deliveries from mid of 2025.

"We consistently challenge ourselves to improve our products and services to ensure we are continuously delivering nothing short of excellence to both new and existing customers," said Jeff Waters, CEO of Powin.

"This next-generation product advancement demonstrates our commitment to bringing the safest and highest quality energy storage solutions to the market, advancing the entire industry as a result", he noted.

The Pod platform claims to deliver a 50 percent increase in energy density from the Centipede platform, thanks to its upgraded cell capacity and cell-to-pack technology, available for 2-hour or greater system applications.

Safety wise, the new system liquid cooling for stable internal battery system temperatures, and complies with stringent fire prevention standards such as UL9540A, NFPA 68 and NFPA 69, while having optional class-leading fire suppression at module and container level.

The new BESS platform is part of a fully integrated Powin energy storage solution that includes an end-to-end offering, spanning from StackOS software, system design, delivery, to commissioning and long-term service.

Powin's proprietary Battery Management System and Energy Management controls comply with robust localized cybersecurity standards and regulations, ensuring superior protection for data privacy and intellectual property, guaranteeing security of customers' data, operations and investment at all times, according to the company.

Customers who select Pod will benefit from Powin's full authorization to perform long-term services at their site, as well as comprehensive system training from the company. Within a fully integrated solution, Powin delivers safety, availability, insight and flexibility, providing lower risk, enhanced performance and improved revenue generation.

The company claims to have deployed over 17 GWh (including those at construction) of battery storage worldwide and monitoring over six million battery cells till date.
