Tata Group to set up 20 GW battery gigafactory in Gujarat

Tata Group subsidiary Agratas Energy Storage Solutions has signed a MoU with the Gujarat Government under the new Electronics Policy with regard to the manufacturing of lithium-ion battery cells in the state.

Rakesh Ranjan, the CEO of Tata Agratas Energy Storage Solutions, and Vijay Nehra, the Secretary of Science and Technology of the Government of Gujarat signed and exchanged the MoU in the presence of the Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel at in Gandhinagar.

Accordingly, the company will be making an initial investment of around ₹ 13,000 crore on a battery gigafactory with a production capacity of 20 GWh in the first phase. With an aim to make first-ever, mass-produced lithium-ion cells in India, the Gujarat government claims that the project will generate direct and indirect employment for more than 13,000 people.

The state government also claims to be committed to increase carbon-free, energy-efficient, and clean energy production by boosting the production of electric vehicles and related products.

With the establishment of Tata Group's plant, Gujarat will become a leading state in lithium-ion cell manufacturing with the required assistance in setting up a battery manufacturing eco-system in the state, the government adds. 

More details on the exact location of the project and construction timelines are expected.
