Piston Group to make EV batteries for startup ONE in US
Piston Automotive, subsidiary of American auto supplier Piston Group, will manufacture EV batteries for energy storage start-up Our Next Energy Inc. (ONE) at the former's facility in Van Buren Township, Michigan. Production is expected to commence later this year, according to Automotive News.
It is reported that the company will produce ONE's Aries range of battery systems that claims to yield higher system-level energy density than leading competitors. It has a 79 kWh of energy, with a peak power of 120 kW.
Aries uses safe and sustainable cathode chemistry (LFP) to avoid thermal runaway and offers a scalable architecture that can be configured in series and parallel, according to ONE.
Bob Holloway, President - Piston Automotive, said, "Our commitment to growth and product expansion over the past decade with other EV industry leading partners has been a key foundation to our success".
"Piston Automotive's expertise in battery assembly process design, testing and service, combined with ONE's innovative battery pack design, is an exciting opportunity and a great fit for our long-term strategy", he added, as quoted by Automotive News.
The auto supplier group has big plans to further expand its presence in the EV segment. It aims for a manufacturing capacity of about 100,000 high-voltage battery units per year in the coming years.
Founded in July 2020, ONE has received $25 million funding from companies like BMW i Ventures, Assembly Ventures, and Breakthrough Energy Ventures in the past. Speaking on the development, CEO Mujeeb Ijaz has said, "The Piston Group has a proven track record as a high-quality manufacturing partner for battery packs. Their experience makes them an ideal partner to assemble our Aries pack".
The battery startup is also planning to reveal a production version of its 'Gemini' battery containing 203.7 KWh and an energy density of 416 Wh/L next year.
