German energy company E.ON SE has announced that it has agreed to a strategic partnership on importing green hydrogen at scale into Germany with Tree Energy Solutions (TES), which is developing a green energy hub in the German port of Wilhelmshaven.

The new agreement comes hot on the heels of the latest announcement that E.on has signed a memorandum of understanding with Australia's Fortescue Future Industries (FFI) for the delivery of up to 5 million tonnes per year of green hydrogen to Europe by 2030.

"The ramp-up of a functioning hydrogen economy must have top priority in Germany and Europe," E.on chief operating officer Patrick Lammers said.

"The partnership with TES is an important step on the way to a sustainable energy landscape while ensuring the security of supply," Lammers added.

As part of the partnership, E.on and TES will explore potential joint engagements along the whole hydrogen value chain.

TES' energy hub will encompass a receiving terminal, storage facilities, and a zero-emissions oxy-fuel combustion power plant. The company is developing the production of green hydrogen in solar belt countries and plans to transport it to Europe in the form of green gas, CH4. At Wilhelmshaven, the CH4 can be converted back into green hydrogen and the resulting CO2 captured and returned to producing countries.
