BYD-FAW battery JV begins mass production of 'blade battery' in China

FAW-FinDreams, the joint venture between BYD's battery arm FinDreams and automaker FAW, has recently started mass roll-out of battery packs for electric vehicles in China, for use in latter's 'Hongqi' marque. The company is located in located in Changchun, Jilin where FAW is based in. 

The battery maker is reported to have commenced production with an initial capacity of 15 GWh, out of the 45 GWh planned capacity. The company will be utilizing BYD's advanced 'Blade battery' technology.  

With the partnering companies investing about RMB 18 billion ($2.5 billion), the battery joint-venture will be able to provide blade batteries for nearly 600,000 new energy vehicles (NEVs), according to FAW-FinDreams.

The battery packs made at the facility will utilize a module-less, highly integrated design solution that balances battery safety, range performance and long-life parameters, the company adds.

BYD, the second largest battery manufacturer, holds 51 percent stake in FAW-FinDreams. The battery JV, established in 2022, rolled its first battery pack in September last year.
