India logistics company Movin, launched as a joint venture between UPS and Indigo Airlines-promoter InterGlobe Enterprises has added electric vehicles (EVs) to its fleet for first and last-mile deliveries, the company announced.
The deployment begins with Delhi-NCR and will be expanded to cover the cities of Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Kolkata and Pune by end of this year, the company said in a release.
Movin, which offers a suite of B2B domestic services across the country with seamless integration across air and ground networks, said it aims to mitigate 200 metric tons of CO2 emissions within the next 12 months by deploying EVs. Each vehicle – the Tata Ace EV – has the capacity to carry up to 850 kg of weight and cover 120 km on a single charge.
JB Singh, Director, Movin Express, said in the release, "We recognize the immense potential of EVs in revolutionizing the way we approach transportation by road. By embracing this transition towards adopting an electric fleet from ICEs (internal combustion engines), we not only contribute to a cleaner and greener future but also enhance the efficiency and reliability of our logistics operations."
Gregory Goba Ble, Vice President for UPS in the Indian subcontinent, Middle East and Africa and Director for Movin Express, added that UPS was continually exploring ways to reduce emissions across global operations and planned to achieve "100 percent carbon neutrality by 2050".
